One Million Rising

One Million Rising registrants,

Some quick numbers to inspire you:

  • 250,000+ people have been skilled up and are ready to take action.
  • 1300+ gatherings have taken place.
  • 400+ more gatherings are scheduled.

That’s what we have achieved together so far — and this is just the beginning. As Chair Gene Wu of the Texas State Legislature said on last night’s call:

“It’s fine that people are waking up late. It’s fine that people didn’t get it until now. It’s fine that people didn’t see it until now. But the real question is: Can we change it?”

Your gatherings, your social media posts, your dedication to showing up for One Million Rising trainings or watching the recordings later is proving that we can! And now, together, we’ll take the next step.

Last night’s third call focused on what each and every one of you can do to participate in this resistance, utilizing the tactics of strategic non-cooperation. In case you missed it, you can watch the video of last night’s call here.

Watch Session 3

For quick reference, here are the calls to action (CTAs) from last night’s call:

We’ll give you a brief introduction to each call to action below, with links to more in-depth content and ways to get involved.

Let’s get to it.

Signs of Solidarity

Image of a butterfly with the words: No Kings. No ICE. No Fear. Immigrants are welcome here.
We’ve seen that the Trump administration is deploying ICE, in record numbers, deep into the heart of our cities, towns, and neighborhoods to spread fear and rip apart communities.

From hardworking immigrants just trying to provide for their children to American citizens too Brown for their liking, masked ICE agents are snatching people out of their workplaces, their court hearings, and even their homes with no regard for the impact on these people or their families. We need to stand up for their rights and show that immigrants are vital, welcome parts of our communities.

For our first call to action, we’re asking you to visit local businesses and ask them to put up signs of solidarity that show their support for their immigrant neighbors, while also making sure they have designated private areas for employees that ICE can’t enter without a signed judicial warrant. Sign up for Signs of Solidarity today.

 Ground Avelo

Most people have never heard of Avelo (rhymes with “hello”) Airlines. It’s a smaller company that became the first commercial airline in the US to sign a deportation charter contract with ICE. Yes, that means Avelo Airlines is in the business of deporting people for profit.

Groups across the country have been working to amplify how Avelo is profiteering off of the ripping apart of families with no guarantee of due process. Those groups have been doing incredible work to amplify the visibility of Avelo’s complicity, and it’s beginning to show: Avelo has made the decision to pull out of the West Coast after protests about their connection to deportations.

Help us turn up the heat on Avelo nationally. Whether you’re in a hub city where Avelo operates, or completely outside of their network, we have actions you can take to ground Avelo.

Fight Trump’s Redistricting Coup

Donald Trump is pressuring states to rig congressional maps to create permanent Republican control of the House.

In any other year, that would sound hyperbolic, but Texas legislators have already had to flee the state in a last ditch effort to prevent the historic disenfranchisement of voters. This is not normal, and we cannot treat it as such. Texas is a test case and just the beginning.

Our friends at Texas For All have set up a National Day of Action for THIS SATURDAY, August 16. You can find an event near you (or sign up to lead one) here.

We are going to need focused opposition work to undermine Trump’s ability to consolidate congressional power all across the country. No matter if you’re in a blue state, red state, or purple state, we have details about the work you can do right now to fight back against this undemocratic coup. Check out our Redistricting Coup toolkit for details here.

Community Resistance Gatherings

Whether you’ve already hosted a gathering or are still gearing up to host your first one, we need to continue to spread the word about strategic non-cooperation and get people skilled up on how to participate. The basics on gatherings:

  • What is a Community Resistance Gathering? It is a meeting of a small group of people, who have some relationship to each other, who come together to build their connection, knowledge, and resilience against fighting authoritarianism.
  • Who should I invite? People you already have some connection to (e.g. friends, friends of friends, neighbors, colleagues), not strangers. Aim for ~10 people.
  • Where should I host it? At home, a public space like a library, or somewhere else — wherever makes sense for you and your connections.
  • Do I need to be an expert? If we wait for one million experts to lead community conversations and communal learning, we will be waiting forever. The point is for you to share with your connections as you learn together.

If you’ve already hosted a gathering and are ready to host your second focusing on our calls to action, here’s our Community Resistance Gathering Host Guide #2.

If you haven’t hosted your first gathering and still need to get people caught up on the basics of strategic non-cooperation, here’s our Community Resistance Gathering Host Guide #1.

Important Links

Let’s close it all out with another quote from Chair Wu: “…What you’re fighting for isn’t for Democrats. It’s sure as hell not just for you. We’re fighting for this country. We’re fighting for the American dream.”

One Million Rising has never just been about the people in the room. It is about the people in our neighborhoods, the people at our jobs, the people we pass by in the grocery store, everybody. We are learning together so that we can spread strategies to the masses that will ensure democracy prevails and the American dream is still not just an aspiration, but a possibility.

The next step is action. Please choose one (or all) of our calls to action that speaks to you and your community, while you also build spaces where you can create your own. Turning education into action is how we win.

Thank you for joining us for these sessions. Stay tuned, we’ll have more to come. Finally, if you have any questions, feel free to email us at onemillionrising@nokings.org

Growing the movement together,

The One Million Rising Team

One Million Rising is a program to teach every-day people ways to resist authoritarianism and encourage each other in doing it. I sent this attachment to Presbyterians and then thought members of my other churches may also be interested. Two of our members and I attended the first 2 online trainings for One Million Rising and have given our first training to others in the church. The links to the recorded videos of trainings we three attended and link to one we will attend (one more to go on Wednesday night) and our bulletin insert and notes on how it turned out are in the attachment.

Love and Hope,

Sharon
